Yes, a band called DAN SATTERFIELDS' DICK exsists. Well, not anymore. But they did. And, it started out in Huntsville. Finally a new group to piss off the masses. If you thought a band name like ALABAMA JIHAD was bad, well, this name finally takes the cake. They released one live album. The album sucks, but that's not what this review is about. It's about the name. Besides, with a name like that, who cares if you're any good?
Every cool town should have some sort of local music scene. In Huntsville - over the years - there has been a wide range of bands that have started up. Some good, some bad, some offensive (for the sake of fun), and some that really wanted to go places. I've been into the Huntsville music scene since 1996. That's when I first saw a band called THE PEEPS. They were amazing. They were scary. They were absolutely crazy. They were the best band I had ever scene in my life - and they came from Huntsville. At the time, they were loved and hated - all at once. Some people thought their shows were horrible and discusting (and messy). Others understood the fact that they were just having fun. The peeps weren't the only band like this. There was SHITBOY FROM OUTER SPACE, JOEY TAMPON AND THE TOXIC SHOCKS, THE PANIC BUTTONS, FUN GIRLS FROM MOUNT PILOT, THE WOPS, etc... See, as long as you've got creative kids who want to make music for the sake of making music, then you're going to have bands formed like DAN SATTERFIELDS' DICK.
I work for the news, and I know Dan personally. I'm not sure if he's happy with this band forming around his name, but I can tell you that it's not a personal attack. The kids who formed this band thought of a great gimick. They made a band (that only performed 2 or 3 times before breaking up) that centered around a meteorologist and weather. It's a great idea.
So, recently, I got a copy of their only album - which was recorded live. Jesus, this recording was bad. It's hard to understand anything, and only the first song sticks out in my mind. Apparently there's 5 songs on this recording. Here are the names:
TRAVELOCITY
DAN SATTERFIELD'S DICK
SCREAMIN' AT A WALL CLOUD
TORNADO KING
WEATHER MAN
I personally take this album as flattery towards Dan Satterfield and all the hard work he's done in Huntsville. This band has since broken up (it was only together for 3 months at the most), but their legacy will live on for years. Thanks guys, for keeping the music scene in Huntsville interesting again. I can't wait to see what crazy-ass band will form next.
