I'm actually very confused by the press kit sitting in front of me of Ahmond's debut album THE BOY YOU ONCE KNEW. In front of me is a toy monkey, a press sheet that looks like a comic book, and a very strange CD packaging. Am I dreaming? Is this for real? Ahmond's agents have really went out of their way to showcase him different from other folk-rock-experimental singers. Seriously, I feel like I just bought a giant box of cereal and inside I've found a prize and other assorted items to keep my mind off the fact that the cereal isn't really that good. But who cares, right? There's a prize inside!
I'm not saying that I don't like this album. It's very different. Somehow, different albums show up on my desk every week. It's just the fact that there's so much to distract me from this music. Nobody has ever sent me a TOY along with their press kit. There's a lot of creativity here, trust me. But what about the music?
Well, I'll tell you about that music of Ahmonds I've been trying to listen to. Did you ever see that movie LABYRINTH with David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly? There were a bunch of muppets throughout and David Bowie sang songs while in skintight spandex. Remember that? Did you like those songs? If you did, then this is what the album reminds me of. All I can picture in my head is Ahmond looking at a movie poster for Labyrinth and saying to himself YEAH, I WANNA MAKE AN ALBUM LIKE THAT. If you didn't like that movie, though, then you're not going to be too happy with this album.
There's a lot of potential here, folks. He's got his style. If you like slower, moody, contemporary folky songs, then this may be something for you. If you like Heavy Metal, though, stay away from this guy's live shows. It will melt your ears.
Ahmond, thanks for the toy and the cool other stuff that's been keeping my attention. I appreciate it.
Check out his website here.
