This Guy Wrote a Book - and I'm reading it PDF Print E-mail

Recently I met up with one of my favorite directors, Lloyd Kaufman (President of Troma studios and Creator of the Toxic Avenger). Not only is he a genius of an independent filmmaker, but over the past few years he's written some books as well. The thing about Lloyd is that he's pretty much bat-shit crazy. You'd have to be to produce films for the budget he uses. It's a damned miracle that his company, TROMA STUDIOS has lasted over 30 years in a world where big time studio corporations have taken over the film industry. Think about it, you can hardly watch true independent films in theaters these days unless you go to one of the few remaining non-chain theaters left. Now, I know that bigger cities don't have this problem as much as the rest of America, but for us living in more secluded regions, we're fucked if we want to watch POULTRYGEIST: NIGHT OF THE CHICKEN DEAD on the big screen like it was intended.

Speaking of Poultrygeist, I've done a review of that movie and it's really good. You all should check it out.

So, Lloyd wrote another book, and I - as a consumer trying to stimulate the economy - bought it. I'm currently halfway through this book, but I'll be done by tonight. It's an incredibly fast read. Reading books by directors such as Lloyd really gives me focus into what I want to be doing - which is making movies. I want to do it all. I've got a very high bar that I'm setting for myself, but some day you'll all remember me as that guy who make a great film or two (or three or 15) and who started out with the words: one day I'll do this...

So, my advice to everybody out there is to live your dream and meet the people you respect (unless they're dead - like Hitler). Meeting these types of people can help you decide if what they do is what you want to do (unless it's Hitler. In which case you can't meet him and you shouldn't want to be like him. There are other fanatical crazy mass-murdering political figures out there that you could idolize, though. Email me and I'll give you a list). If you want to be a director or filmmaker, then meet the people you respect. If you want to do special effects and make it look like you took some guy's head off with a meat-cleaver (for fake, not for real) then I might suggest you meet up with Tom Savini - he's the best at that. Or if you want to do something dumb like win the Olympics, then you should meet up with one of those people. I think Shawn White will be in your town sometime soon. He's got some medals. That's what they give away, right? Medals?

So, take my advice and do it. Live your dream. Meet your dream-makers. Stop reading this and go forth, my sons/daughters!
