Sometimes it's hard to distinguish a good band from a bad band before listening to their music. Like, when you hear the name of a group for the very first time, that could actually determine if you will want to listen to them or not. It's got to be hard these days for bands to come up with a name. You know, something that will catch the audience off guard. It needs to be a name that will jump up, reach out it's hand, tickle your senses, and lead you to the CD/record player to play their music. That's pretty much the case with ZEN BOY AND KARMA GIRL. I couldn't help but to listen to their album due to the name. I was intrigued.
The major highlight of this album has got to be a strange, acoustic version of the Beastie Boys song YOU GOTTA FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT TO PARTY. Trust me, you've got to have a lot of balls to redo that song. It's a classic. Some people would argue that it should never be performed by any other group. This version definitely is different, but it's pleasant. It's good. I like it. Way to go, people!
Another song that I'm happy with is OFF WE GO. It's simple, joyful, and fun. It's almost as though it's written for little children.
Ok, so my general response to this album is that it's worth listening to if you want to relax a bit. If you've just watched a movie like RUSHMORE and you're coming down from that good-movie-high, then this is the album that will do the trick for you. Or, if you're a bored guy who has been tricked into going on a 2-week road trip with your girlfriend and her entire family (including that fucking dog, Rex) this is the album you should have in your IPOD which should be blasting all the time while you look at trees and powerlines pass you by while sitting in the back seat of the car.
Check out their website, fools!
