This album took me by surprise. Of course, I should have figured out by the cover of the CD (a picture of a cat being lazy sitting on a chair) that Matt's music was going to be slow, easy-going, and melodic. But, for an album called WISH I COULD MAKE YOU DANCE it kind of threw me a little bit. The question that enters my mind from the album title is this: IF YOU WANT TO MAKE SOMEONE DANCE, THEN YOU NEED TO SPEED UP YOUR SONGS A LITTLE BIT! Other than that, I like this album.
Matt Macaulay is a very talented singer/songwriter. I like his style. Though, I would not classify his music as JAZZ-TINGLED ART-POP. I would definitely say it's jazzy-folk. There are a number of different instruments here, too. There's a whole slew of people mentioned in the liner notes that played different instruments on these songs. Yikes, that's more than I want to count!
Listening to this brings me back to when I was 16 and I would hang out in coffee shops late at night during the weekends. I would meet some very strange folks who would try to talk about philosophy or their latest acid trips and how the world is changing so very much from what their parents told them the world was supposed to be. I always thought those people were full of shit, but they were fun to listen to every now and again. The person playing guitar in the corner sounded a lot like this guy, Matt Macaulay. His music brings me back to that time of my life. It was a strange time.
So, if you're into slower, moody, jazzy, folk-y, coffee-shop-style music, then this album is essential for your collection. Support the independent artists, folks! Support Matt Macaulay!
